The Tervuren is a Belgian shepherd breed who looks closely to the Groenendael and a Border Collie. This breed has a strong working ethic like all of the Belgian breeds and is known to be well behaved and helpful. With an easy training personality, they have been the type of dog that would track down felons, sniff for bombs, and protect civilians for many years.
Origin
These energetic dogs have been known to be around since the late 1800's and early 1900's. They have appeared in numerous dog shows since the late 50's and many think they might be a cross of a type of collie with some German Shepherd blood. Being from Eastern Europe, their type has been around since the Neolithic period, but it is unknown when they became shorter and grew more fur.
Tervuren dogs have a unique look with a long muzzle and small nose. They have triangular ears pointed up showing their observant personalities. Their eyes are close together and the bridge of their nose has a small bump to it. They are of medium stature, weighing in at about forty pounds and their legs are of a medium length as well. The tail is long and bushy and their hind quarters are lean and strong. Tervurens most common color is the black head and tan body but they also come vice versa and all black.
They have strong protective instincts that they use well when used as a police task force dog. They need to keep busy or else they well hyperactive and even a little neurotic. They are helpful and sturdy enough to chase humans, rescue people in need and being an overall hero. Being watchful and cooperative is their best trait and it also makes them a wonderful pet for a big family as they will want to protect and serve their household.
They have a thick and fluffy double coat that insulate them from low temperatures during winter, but they needs brushing daily to keep coatnice and shiny. Bath time is needed once a month with some gentle skin shampoo since they can gain allergies quickly. These dogs only have a few problems such as skin allergies and eye allergies. They can also get the sniffles from pollen on hot summer days, so they may need some medication to keep it down. In good health, they can live up to fourteen years.
