The American Akita, a dog breed with an attentive and capable appearance, is one of the most popular breeds all across Japan. Despite its name, it was actually bred in the mountains of Japan and is a wholly different sort than its Akita Inu relative. The American Akita is a bit more stocky, has softer and more abundant fur with a larger nose. Being from its ancestor, the Matagi dog, they still have a strong sense of hunting within them.
Appearance
These dogs are quite muscular, they have a thick neck, strong legs, and muscled back. Their back legs are powerful and their tail is a cute long curly cue. They usually have a "black mask" on their face, unless they are of all white. They come in brindle, tawny, beige, white and brown, all black and all beige. Their face resembles a bear slightly just like their Akita Inu brothers, and their ears stick straight up in a triangular shape. They can weigh to thirty to fifty pounds.
Temperament
American Akitas are positively fearless, they have a hefty amount of courage which dates back to their Matagi ancestry. They are very affectionate to their family and can be courageously territorial. They have some silly mannerism that can make people laugh, especially when they tend to clean their face in the way of a cat. They can be stubborn too however, and at times will not listen to the commands given to them, making them a breed that is not suited for everyone. Akitas need to be socialized with other dogs to make them stop their aloof antics and get well acquainted with other dogs.
Grooming
They need major grooming since their coat is thick and bristly. Grooming up to two times a day can be very beneficial and will stop long term shedding. Bathing should not be done as often as other dog breeds, since the more bath time they get, the more their coat will be less waterproof. They should only get a bath when it is utmost necessary.
Health
Akitas live up to twelve years in adequate health. They need long walks once a day and a strong diet that encourages them to lose weight, since they can gain pounds steadily. Akitas can get knee problems so its best to have their legs looked at every time they go to the vet.
The American Akita is a vigorous dog breed that has a strong will and an underlying sweetness. They may be aloof at times and will not listen to every word, but they always enjoy their family even if it doesn't seem like it.
