The Berger Picard Dog Breed

The Berger Picard is a French herding dog that is known for its short and wiry fur and quick agility. They have been confused with a larger type of terrier because of their diminutive looks. Like most European dog breeds, they almost died out during the two World Wars but were resurrected by breeders who felt that they needed these dogs back in to compete in dog shows.
Origin
There is no proof, but they are thought to be one of the oldest dogs in France. In the 9th century, this dog who was much bigger at the time, was brought over to the northern part of France by the Franks as a gift. They also may have been born and bred in the Dutch highlands in the 7th century but there is no proof on this information. They have been ever popular during the 1800's at dog shows because of their rustic looks and easy to train personalities.

Appearance

The Picard is a small herding dog that weighs about fifty pounds, a mighty weight for its size. They are compact and have a crisp coat that is somewhat wiry to the touch. Their muzzles are elongated and their eyes are close together, usually coming in a brown hue. Their ears are pointed up and in a triangular shape, their backs are long and hearty. Their fur coat has wisps around the ears and paws, giving them a just rolled out of bed appearance. The most common color is a soft brown with grey patches.

Temperament

They are well balanced with a strong presence of helping and adoring their human masters. They are quick witted and show intelligence through the commands they can learn. Being mellow, they enjoy the laid back nature of a lazy day and will follow behind their master's trail rather than leading them. Picards are known to be very selective about their food choices, so they need a diet that they will indeed eat and need to keep that way.

Grooming and Health

They are actually a low maintenance dog, their thick fur coat needs brushing every week to get rid of any tangles and mats and a bath is needed once a month with some detangling conditioner. Picards are known to be disease free but they can suffer joint problems when they reach old age and need to have some proper medication. These normally healthy dogs can live to be fifteen years.

Berger Picards are a cute dog with a charming personality. Despite their herding instincts, they are easy to train and are a welcomed friend in any household.
